The WSH Crew goes Slack
11. May 2017

In the last couple of months, we have been trying out a new way of communication behind the scenes of the WSH Crew with Slack, a very powerful messaging and collaboration tool in the style of an IRC chat. Because a moderated Slack channel will be shown on screen in the Weekly Space Hangout and Astronomy Cast from now on, we would now like to invite all community members to the WSH Slack.

Joining the Slack is easy! Just write an email to slack@wsh-crew.net to receive an invitation with all further details. We will vet each applicant to avoid spammers and trolls and for this reason we would like to ask everyone to include the Google+ profile you have joined the community with in your request. Once you have joined, you will have access to the WSH Slack, which not only has the live chat channels for the WSH and Astronomy Cast, but also a general area, a guest suggestion corner, an off-topic channel just for chatting and we may even create more channels as we go along. The same house rules as in the community also apply in the Slack chat.

The WSH Slack is not meant to replace our Google+ Community – it is simply an alternate, faster way to communicate with each other and to support the hangouts and projects the WSH Crew is affiliated with. So don’t worry, we will not close down our primary home and will continue to post all the space news, information about the hangouts and more in the Google+ Community!

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us in the community or via email.

WSH Crew Auctions are coming!
10. May 2017

WSH CREW AUCTIONS
A while ago, we mentioned that we here at the Crew had a few things up our sleeves… for example, as many of you know, we just finished up a very cool giveaway of the new book “Exoplanets” to two of our viewers (congratulations again to Raza Siddiqui and Vicki Knoer!)

Well, it’s time to announce the NEXT one of our awesome projects – at least WE think it is pretty awesome…

To remind everyone, CosmoQuest/Astronomy Cast is one of our sister organizations, and they rely on the financial generosity of viewers who are able to help out in any way. As a way to help supplement viewer donations, give our members/viewers a chance to get some swag, and to hopefully have a little fun along the way, the WSH Crew is pleased to announce that in the next few days we will be launching WSH Crew Auctions. Initially we will be offering some CQX swag (and maybe one or two other non-swag items) for folks to bid on with ALL winning bids/proceeds going directly to CosmoQuest via their Patreon Portal via PayPal.

For the time being, the intent is for the auctions to be open to bidders world-wide, and to charge no shipping fees either. However, depending how things go and what the specific item/destination is, we may modify this policy on an item-by-item basis – changes will be mentioned in each auction should this be necessary.

For now, we are also limiting selling to one account to simplify matters on all levels. If anyone wants to donate an item, let us know and we will figure out the semantics of how to do so.

Finally – this is NOT going to be a publicly accessible system. Bidders MUST be either a member of the WSH Crew Google+ community or a Slack member. This is non-negotiable. We are doing this completely on a volunteer basis and for a bit of community fun while hopefully helping out CosmoQuest.

I hope everyone is as excited about this as we are. We hope to be live with our first auction early next week. For now, if you have any questions, just ask away.

Going forward here, we will be announcing the start of each new auction – and auction winners – over in the #swag Slack channel, so if you are interested, be sure to subscribe to it!

Book Giveaway – Our Cosmic Story
5. May 2017

On Friday, May 5, 2017, the WSH again welcomes Mathew Anderson, author of Our Cosmic Story, to the show. You may recall that Mathew joined us last fall just prior to the release of Our Cosmic Story and he was kind enough to offer our viewers free electronic copies just for the asking. Since then, Mathew has expanded the last chapter of his book to include additional information about SETI, and with the recent exoplanet discoveries, many of the other chapters are of even greater relevance.

We are pleased to announce that, as part of Mathew’s return visit, for a limited time, Is Anybody Out There?: An Expanded Excerpt from Our Cosmic Story is available for free – simply visit its Amazon Site to get your copy.

For those viewers who would like a copy of the complete book, Mathew is again kindly offering our viewers a free, updated electronic copy of it. Between now and Noon EST on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, send an email to ourcosmicstory@gmail.com to request a copy. Be sure to mention that you saw this on the Weekly Space Hangout.

Please note that this offer has expired as of Noon EST on Tuesday, May 9, 2017.
